Many of us have regular 9 to 5 day jobs. For some of us this may not be enough depending on our situation or our goals. Luckily for us we now have the Internet which is a great way to make extra money from home.
However, I won’t be talking about doing tasks like surveys or rating music to make money today, although those are definitely viable methods.
What’s wrong with those methods though?
To be honest if you make money through surveys or what not, it’s not really any different from you taking a second job. You have to spend time to make money and if you stop spending time you stop earning money.
So what should you do?
The best way to make some extra passive income online is by starting your own website or blog.
Why do I say this?
Because of the term “passive”. In short you can earn those extra bucks without having to do anything. Your website will help you make money.
You may be asking, isn’t this too good to be true? What’s the catch?
There is a catch – hard work and persistence.
If you’ve heard stories of people making 5 or 6 figures online, this can be done and is definitely true. What you probably don’t know is how long it took them to get there.
Typically it takes an average person about half a year to start earning money from their website. This of course depends on how hard you work.
Lets compare making a website with other methods
- You won’t see much earning in the beginning
- You have to work extremely hard by posting regularly, even if you don’t get paid
- In the long run, your website will make more money than any other opportunity out there
- Huge potential, you can earn enough to quit your day job or aim higher for that 6 figure income
- You will need to study a lot as well
Other ways :
- Easy way to make that extra money
- You get paid immediately after completing your task
- In the long run, you will probably still be making the same amount of money as when you first started
- Not much potential to make a huge amount ( depends on what you choose to do )
- Not much studying required
One last reminder, this is not a get rich quick scheme, you are actually building your own business here.
Are you still interested in starting your own website?
If you are read on.
How the process goes
Step 1 – Choose your interest or niche
Basically you have to decide on what your website will be about. As a beginner it is advised that you choose something specific for less competition.
Instead of going for something like fitness, you could focus on how to get a six pack.
Bear in mind you should choose something that you enjoy, because you will be spending a lot of time writing posts about this topic for your website.
Step 2 Build your website
It’s time to dive right in. Building a website is easy nowadays and you can create one for free.
You should read my post on building a website if you’re not familiar with this.
To cut things short you can start off with a free website but eventually you will want to buy your own domain name.
Remember, your website is like your online business, something that you want to invest in when you start making money.
Step 3 Start posting
Now your website or blog will need some posts and pages.
To make money with your website it will need some good content. Posts that are informative and useful to others.
As a tip, you are free to write however you want but there are also some skills related to blogging. I suggest you have a look at my post about writing an interesting blog post.
Also before you start a post, you should research your keywords.
Keywords are the terms that people search for on Google, and each of your post should focus on a particular keyword. You should also spend some time to read up on how to use keywords effectively.
In my opinion a decent website should have about 20 posts at least. You’re free to launch your website whenever you want to though but people do need stuff to see.
Step 4 Search engine optimization (SEO)
As a beginner, you probably won’t be ready to start investing yet.
So you want to get people to visit your website for free. There are ways you can pay to get people to visit which you can look up later.
So what is SEO?
In short, getting a high rank in Google, you know, like the first page of Google Search.
How do you do this exactly?
As someone just starting out, you should aim for keywords or search terms which have low competition, meaning a keyword that not many other websites are using.
You can get information on keywords with keyword tools.
The reasoning behind this is that it is very hard to rank for popular keywords, and by going for less popular ones your chances are increased significantly.
Ranking highly for 50 low competition keywords is better than ranking somewhere in the middle for a high competition keyword because no one looks past the first page of Google anyway.
Step 5 Social media
After you have a decent amount of posts on your website you can start looking into social media.
Do note that there are paid methods and free methods as well.
I’m talking about the free one today. You simply choose which social media platform you want to promote on and create an account solely for your website.
You then start finding people related to your niche or people who might be interested in what your website has to offer and start building up your followers.
I’m not just talking about Facebook or Twitter here although those are options as well. There much more choices out there which you should look into.
In the beginning I would suggest you choose 1 or 2 platforms and focus on those. If you start creating accounts everywhere it might be hard for you to manage them.
Bear in mind that there are some skills that you have to pick up in order to promote on social media effectively.
Each social media platform has a different way of promoting which is why you should only focus on a few first.
Step 6 Rinse and repeat until you get traffic
Remember how I said this might take 6 months?
You have to keep doing the above steps to one day be able to get a decent audience for your website.
The usual cycle goes something like this:
- find an idea for your next post
- research keywords for that post
- start writing
- promote your new post
Step 7 Monetize
At this point with a decent viewer base you will start to see some income.
There are many ways in which you can monetize your blog or website like affiliate marketing or advertisements, just to name a few.
Your website will help you make some extra money even in your sleep, and this was all because of the hard work you put in in the beginning.
Don’t stop here though, there really are tons of opportunities to further increase your income. After all, there are some guys making 6 figures a month with their websites and you can do the same.
Want to know how you can get started for free?
Yes the above steps I mentioned are all free. I do admit my explanation isn’t the most detailed and you might still have some questions.
If you’re serious about this, I recommend you check out Wealthy Affiliate. It is free to sign up and you get to create a free website.
They have videos that give a more detailed explanation on how to do this as well.
At the end of the day it is up to you to decide which path to take.
Different methods will suit different people with in different situations.
I do recommend you look into this at least, the reason I’m sharing this with you is because I personally think this can change your life for the better.
Also do be careful, in order to make a decent amount of money you will have to put in a decent amount of work.
If a program claims that you don’t need to work hard or don’t need any knowledge it’s probably a scam and you should stay away.
