Foap Review – Can You Really Make Money Selling Photos on Your Phone?

By | February 23, 2017

taking picture with phone

Everyone is taking pictures with their phones nowadays. I’m pretty sure you do it too. Whether you’re on holiday or eating, we all take pictures (sometimes to show off on social media).

It is also no secret that you can sell your photos online. Since it is so easy to just snap a photo, why not try selling it as well?

What is Foap

Foap is a smartphone app that lets you sell your photos online.

The sign up process is quick and easy and it doesn’t take much to be able to upload your photo to the marketplace.

This is why I recommend Foap because some other apps or websites are relatively more strict. I’ve tried uploading some photos on Foap and none of them got rejected while uploading on another app got me a 50% rejection rate ( I’m not a photographer ).

When you have a photo in mind to upload, you will need to add a caption and tags. These help categorize and help others find your photos.

You should spend some time thinking what searches would be most relevant to your photo and use those terms as tags.

The uploading process

  1. upload a picture
  2. write your caption
  3. add your keywords/tags ( minimum of 5 )
  4. answer if there is someone in the photo, yes or no

Foap App Features

As a platform and app for selling photos, I really enjoy Foap because it isn’t just simply uploading and selling.

1. Rating system

After you upload a picture other users will rate them on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. You can rate other photos as well. To be honest if you take a decent picture it should be easy to consistently get 4 to 5 stars.

2. Missions

My favourite part of Foap, and the reason why I would recommend it to beginners is that there is a contest (or mission as they call it) section where companies put out requests for certain kinds of photos.

Anyone can enter and the prize is stated in the details. The process of uploading for a mission is the same as regular uploads.

When I was using Foap Nivea put out a few competitions, asking for pictures of a specific flower and another contest of a girl using nivea products. They obviously want it for marketing material.

3. Albums

So an album is just a collection oh photos. However albums can actually make you money too.

It shocked me when I got a message saying someone added my picture to their album, I thought I managed to earn $5. Turns out this wasn’t the case.

But this is still a good thing. If your photo gets sold because of that person’s album then you still get paid $5, but he or she gets paid $0.25 as well. Pretty cool eh?

This means you can add other photos to your album as well. This is similar to advertising I guess but you don’t lose anything by selling through another person’s album.

Good job on this one Foap!

The good things about Foap

  • It has more features than other apps like rating and competitions
  • It is more lenient in approving your photos so pretty much anything you take with your phone will be approved
  • Easy uploading process
  • Suitable for beginners wanting to take photos
  • Photo albums are a nice way to make money too
  • Competitions are also a great way to start making money since you know what kind of photos are in demand

The bad things about Foap

  • You need to keep rating other photos for people to rate yours
  • For some reason, after uploading my photo the app lags when I try to type my caption or keywords
  • Since it is so easy to upload a picture there will be tons of other photos as competition
  • It is probably hard to make money outside of competitions

Can you make money selling photos with Foap?

So the way it works is that each photo is priced at $10 ( not the competition photos ), you make $5 and Foap makes $5 when someone buys your photo.

It is easy to cash out as well, you just need $5 which basically means selling 1 picture.

The best part is you can keep selling the same picture over and over again, making $5 each time !

But let’s be honest here, how is easy it is to make a sale?

At $10 a photo I would say the price isn’t all that enticing as a buyer. To top it off you’re gonna have millions of competition.

You are allowed to look at other user’s profiles and see their photos. I’ve done some snooping around and most of the guys who’ve managed to make a sale only sell 1 or 2 photos.

The reality is it isn’t easy and although you can upload as many photos as you want the chances of you selling something is extremely low.

Missions are a good way to make money but you would need very specific photos. In the case of Nivea you would need to pose with the Nivea face cream or whatever for your photo to be eligible.

How to increase your chances of selling your photo

As a blogger, I’m more of a buyer than I am a photographer and a seller so I can tell you a few things about what I want.

The most important thing is that your photo should say something or have a focus. I’ve seen some photos on Foap that make me go ” What is this guy actually taking a picture of? “.

If I write a blog post I want a picture that is related to my post. Let’s say I’m writing about a post about creating a website, I would look for a picture of a someone sitting at the computer that looks like he’s creating a website.

See my point here? If you’re picture tells a specific story someone else might find value in it.

If you take a picture of a cat and you make it obvious that the point of the photo is the cat some cat blogger mind find it useful.

Should you use Foap?

Yes you should, Foap isn’t a scam or anything and there is no harm in uploading your photos and trying to make a sale.

Just bear in mind that you can’t make big money with Foap. Actually I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t make any at all. If you’re looking to make some money online, I mean like series money I recommend Wealthy Affiliate.

Leave a comment below if you have any experience selling photos online or if you’re a photographer ! I would love to hear your thoughts.

This is a really interesting app that I’ve never heard before.

But what?!! A photo from non-professional photographer priced at $10?? I doubt anyone will buy.

I can find a lot of free professional photos online to download. Why would people want to purchase there?

I can see why the ability to make sales is very low. Although it’s not scam, it looks like an app that waste a lot of people’s time…

I agree the price makes no sense. I guess this is the trade off for such a easy to upload platform. I would say if anyone is serious about making here the missions or contests are the way to go.

I can see how challenging it could be trying to selling a digital product that almost anyone can create these days on a crowded marketplace. As someone with some photography experience, I think a photo must be extremely unique in order to fetch a high selling price.

Would it be better, however, to sell through a personalized photo blog? I wonder if there’s any demand for that.

I agree Cathy, the photos that do sell have some kind of meaning or are just suited for the clients use. It has to be of a certain quality as well.

As far as a personalized photo blog goes, I believe it might be hard to get traffic in the beginning, if your blog is popular though and you have a decent fan base then you might be able to make a lot of money.

Hey there! This is really informative and interesting. I’m looking for a part time job that I can do without any effort. And I think this FOAP is the perfect way to earn money with not that much effort needed. Just a phone and take a picture that is awesome is only the key with this kind of job. Thank you for sharing this information and I will try this to earn money even though it’s not that much.
