I know affiliate marketing sounds like a very attractive business idea, and I’m sure if given the chance you’d like to jump on the bandwagon as well since you can make some pretty good income from home.

What if I told you that you can start being an affiliate marketer after reading this post?

What if I told you that you don’t need a lot of money to start?

I’ve summarized the process of making money with affiliate marketing into 6 simple steps so you can learn the ropes.

Before we start : Understand Affiliate Marketing

Firstly, you need to know what you’re getting yourself into. Stop thinking about the money and commissions for a second.

Affiliate marketing is very much like being an online salesman/saleswoman, and I will admit that not everyone enjoys being a salesman/saleswoman.

You should also understand how affiliate marketing works.

How does affiliate marketing work

To sum it up into 3 simple steps :

  1. You find an affiliate program and sign up for it. Some affiliate programs would pretty much accept you right away but there are some that have a strict hiring process.
  2. Start promoting the products related to your affiliate program using an affiliate link. An affiliate link is used to track the amount of sales you get.
  3.  Customers click on your affiliate link and purchase whatever you’re promoting. Your affiliate program sees this and pays you your commissions accordingly.

Also understand that you’ll need some key skills in order to make it as an affiliate marketer, like knowing how to generate leads or sell a product.

#1 Pick a Niche

Before you even get to the making money part, you’ll have to decide what kind of products you want to promote.

Sure you have the freedom of promoting anything you want, from laptops to cat earrings but having a focused topic ( basically a niche ) would make things easier in the beginning.

The idea is that if you promote a laptop today, and some earring tomorrow, people will notice that and they can put 2 and 2 together that you’re promoting just for the sake of getting a commission.

Most successful affiliate marketers focus on their own niche, so that they can seem like a sort of “expert” in this particular field.

In case you’re wondering, you don’t have to “fake it till you make it”. If you’re committed to your niche you will eventually know more and more, to the point where you’ll definitely be able to educate your customers.

On a side note, it is also a good idea to pick a niche that you’re interested in personally, because if you’re passionate about it surely you’ll know a thing or two about this topic right?

#2 Pick out some good products in your niche

If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably figured out that being an affiliate marketers means you’ll try to sell stuff.

Of course, in every market, there are good products and there are bad products. You really want to promote the good ones to build trust with your customers.

There is also some confusion around only promoting a product that you’ve tried out.

Personally I don’t try out all the programs that I review here on this site. The thing is, the more engrossed you are in your niche, the easier it is to discern crappy products.

You might think that we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover as well, which I agree. If possible, you can test out a new product in your market, then opt for a refund.

#3 Research and join some reputable affiliate networks

So now that you have a general direction of what product you want to promote, it’s time to hunt for these affiliate programs !

One of the most popular programs I would recommend is Amazon Associates, which is Amazon’s very own affiliate program.

There are many more out there and some will be specific to your niche.

Some things to look out for when choosing an affiliate program :

  1. The commissions structure, is it a one time commission or can you make a recurring commission?
  2. How long does the cookie last ? If you get someone to click on your link today, but he/she only decides to buy next week, do you still get the sale?
  3. Can you trust the payment scheme? Do they pay you on time every month?

Again to elaborate, not every affiliate network will accept a newcomer ( Amazon would ), so you should build up your experience first before joining the tougher ones.

#4 Write up your marketing plan

It’s time to get yourself out there !

You currently have this killer product that you’d like to share with everyone, but there’s one problem.

Nobody knows who you are or what you do.

You need a plan, a plan that can give you some exposure, a plan that can get people interested, and ultimately make you some money.

There are plenty of ways you can promote your affiliate link like :

  • blogging
  • social media marketing
  • email marketing

There is also no reason not to incorporate all 3 of these methods !

In my opinion though this is the toughest step to being an affiliate marketer and people can spend years trying to learn this.

My advice is to just take it slow. Learn as much as you can, start small and scale up eventually. Have patience and trust me, you will be able to make a full time income sooner or later.

#5 Analyze and fine tune

Whatever way you choose to get customers ( we call this leads/traffic ), you’ll still need to analyze your performance.

Some important metrics that we look at are impressions (views) of your campaign, the click through rate, and most important the conversion ( the percentage of people who buy ).

Psychology works in mysterious ways, sometimes even changing the color of something could improve your conversion rate, who knows?

The idea I’m trying to get across here is to always try to improve because better statistics also mean more money for you.

#6 Automate whatever you can

It’s time to understand the vast array of Internet marketing tools out there.

There’s just so much that you can automate nowadays, which is why some people call it a passive income stream !

For example, You have autoresponders that send out emails on your behalf automatically.

At some point you’ll start to get a hang of things, this is when you should look into investing in some software help.

Not only will it make your life easier, it makes things more organized and can scale your affiliate marketing business.

Your to-do list after this

Are you ready to take action? cuz nothing is gonna happen unless you do.
